The inquisitive exploratory spirit: OUBEY @ Leonardo

Four months ago the OUBEY Digital Discovery Show had its brilliant world premiere at the 5thAnniversary Happening of OUBEY MINDKISS at the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. Now it will be featuring at the prestigious Leonardo Awards on 14 September in Bonn.

This one-of-a-kind installation gives a virtual view of the astonishing changes that occur in the colors and structures of OUBEYs multi-layered paintings when natural sunlight falls on them from different angles and in different degrees of intensity. The idea that led to the Digital Discovery had its origin in a chance encounter with the transformations wrought in a painting by the play of natural sunlight. By moving a Magic Bowl viewers can now let virtual sunlight and moonlight wander over the surface of digital 3D reproductions of various paintings and see for themselves the dramatic changes brought about in the deeper layers of the painting – quite independently of the actual light conditions in the room.

Christoph Brosius, who together with Dagmar Woyde-Koehler first hit on the idea for Digital Discovery, is the recipient of this year’s Young Leonardo Award – For Fun-Energized Learning in recognition of his innovative ingenious development of various applications, including the OUBEY Digital Discovery, that turn common everyday experience into joyful, playful discovery and learning. At the Leonardo Awards we are presenting the Digital Discovery Show as a “space within a space” concept and we’re really looking forward to seeing how it will go down with the audience.
